Frequently Asked Questions

How does the Image Color Palette Extractor identify dominant colors?

The tool samples pixel data on an HTML5 Canvas and applies Median-Cut and K-Means color quantization in RGB space to cluster similar pixels together, ranking the resulting color centroids by their pixel coverage percentage.

Are my images uploaded to an external server for color extraction?

No. All image decoding, pixel sampling, and color quantization happen 100% locally in your browser using the HTML5 Canvas 2D API. Your photos and design mockups never leave your device.

How do I sample an exact pixel color from the image?

Simply click or drag anywhere on the interactive image canvas. The built-in pixel eyedropper reads the exact (x, y) coordinate and displays its HEX, RGB, and HSL values for instant copying.

Which image formats are supported?

You can drag and drop, browse, or paste PNG, JPEG, WebP, SVG, GIF, and AVIF images directly from your file system or clipboard.

How many colors can I extract at once?

You can choose between 5, 6, 8, 10, 12, or 16 dominant colors. Changing the selector immediately re-quantizes the loaded image without needing to re-upload it.

What does the percentage badge on each color swatch mean?

The percentage indicates the relative dominance of that color cluster across the non-transparent pixels of the image, which is also visualized in the proportional distribution bar above the swatches.

How is the WCAG text contrast indicator calculated on swatches?

For each extracted color, the tool computes relative luminance according to WCAG 2.1 formulas and recommends whether white (#FFFFFF) or black (#000000) foreground text provides higher contrast and readability.

Can I export the extracted palette directly to Tailwind CSS or CSS Variables?

Yes. Use the Export Palette Code dropdown to generate ready-to-paste CSS Custom Properties (:root), Tailwind CSS theme.extend.colors configuration, SCSS variables, structured JSON, or a standalone SVG swatch graphic.

Can I paste an image directly from my clipboard?

Yes. Press Ctrl+V (or Cmd+V on macOS) while on the tool tab to paste any screenshot or copied image directly into the extractor.

How are transparent pixels in PNG or SVG files handled?

Pixels with low alpha opacity (transparent backgrounds in logos or icons) are automatically filtered out during quantization so they do not skew your extracted palette toward black or white.
