RSA & AES Encryption Suite

Encrypt and decrypt text with AES-256-GCM/CBC, generate RSA-2048/4096 PEM keypairs, and perform RSA-OAEP encryption and digital signing locally via Web Crypto.

Web Crypto Ready
KDF: PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA256 (100,000 iter)
Cryptographic Parameters Breakdown AES-256-GCM
Salt (Hex): -
IV / Nonce (Hex): -
Key Fingerprint: -
Integrity / Status: Authenticated

How to Use

Select AES Symmetric Cipher (AES-256-GCM or AES-256-CBC with PBKDF2 key derivation) or RSA Asymmetric Cryptography (RSA-OAEP encryption/decryption and RSA-PSS signing). All cryptographic operations execute 100% locally in your browser using the native Web Crypto API.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between AES symmetric encryption and RSA asymmetric encryption?

AES (Advanced Encryption Standard) is a symmetric cipher that uses the same secret key for both encryption and decryption, making it extremely fast for large payloads. RSA is an asymmetric public-key cryptosystem that uses a mathematically linked keypair: a public key to encrypt data or verify signatures, and a private key to decrypt data or sign messages.

Why is AES-256-GCM recommended over AES-256-CBC?

AES-256-GCM (Galois/Counter Mode) is an Authenticated Encryption with Associated Data (AEAD) cipher. In addition to confidentiality, it computes a 128-bit authentication tag that detects any tampering or bit-flipping prior to decryption, protecting against padding oracle attacks that can affect AES-CBC.

How does PBKDF2 key derivation protect my passphrase?

Human-readable passwords rarely have uniform cryptographic entropy. PBKDF2 (Password-Based Key Derivation Function 2) combines your passphrase with a cryptographically random 128-bit salt and applies 100,000 iterations of HMAC-SHA256 to derive a 256-bit key, drastically slowing down brute-force and rainbow-table attacks.

What is the salt:iv:ciphertext bundle format?

To decrypt AES ciphertext derived from a passphrase, the recipient needs the exact random PBKDF2 salt and Initialization Vector (IV) used during encryption. Neither the salt nor the IV is secret, so packing them as colon-delimited Base64 or Hex segments (salt:iv:ciphertext) provides a self-contained portable payload.

What is RSA-OAEP and why does RSA have a payload size limit?

RSA-OAEP (Optimal Asymmetric Encryption Padding) adds probabilistic padding to prevent chosen-ciphertext attacks. Because RSA operates on modular arithmetic bounded by the key modulus (e.g., 2048 bits = 256 bytes minus OAEP hash padding), direct RSA encryption is designed for small secrets such as symmetric session keys or tokens.

How do RSA-PSS digital signatures work?

RSA-PSS (Probabilistic Signature Scheme) hashes your message (using SHA-256, SHA-384, or SHA-512) and signs the digest using your private key. Anyone with your public key can verify that the signature matches the message and could only have been produced by the holder of the private key.

Should I choose 2048-bit or 4096-bit RSA keys?

RSA-2048 is the current industry baseline for TLS certificates and general encryption, offering fast key generation. RSA-4096 provides a much larger security margin for long-lived root keys and sensitive archives at the cost of slower keypair generation and larger ciphertexts.

What are SPKI and PKCS#8 PEM key formats?

SPKI (SubjectPublicKeyInfo) is the standard ASN.1 DER structure wrapped inside -----BEGIN PUBLIC KEY----- blocks, while PKCS#8 is the standard private key format wrapped inside -----BEGIN PRIVATE KEY----- blocks. Both are natively supported by OpenSSL, Node.js, Python cryptography, and Web Crypto.

Why does encrypting the same plaintext twice produce completely different ciphertexts?

Both AES (via a fresh random 16-byte salt and 12/16-byte IV on every operation) and RSA-OAEP (via random OAEP padding seed) are probabilistic encryption schemes. Semantic security ensures an observer cannot tell whether two ciphertexts were generated from identical plaintexts.

Are my keys, passphrases, or plaintexts ever transmitted over the network?

Never. Every key generation, key derivation, encryption, decryption, and signature verification step executes strictly inside your browser's isolated Web Crypto API (window.crypto.subtle) with zero server calls or telemetry.
